Camp in Hawaii and Pitch Your Tent on a Beach or Volcano

October 31st, 2008

Imagine awakening to dawn’s first light glistening on a sleepy blue ocean. The day’s sun bathers and swimmers haven’t yet arrived. The silence is broken only by the rising tide splashing into tide pools, kissing the starfish and urchins. The beach is yours! Or imagine pitching a tent in Volcanoes National Park. As daylight fades and a soothing fragrance from the rain splashed Eucalyptus wafts through the cool air, an outdoor fireplace provides cozy warmth.

The sounds are soothing: rain gently splashing on the pavilion’s roof and the broad shiny leaves of surrounding plants, the crackling fire, and the hushed chirping of native birds nesting in the high canopy of massive Koa and Eucalyptus that stand sentinel. E komo mai (welcome) to camping in the Hawaiian Islands!

While Hawaii’s world renowned luxury resorts are tempting, one might do well to trade in those plastic lei and simulated waterfalls for a taste of true Paradise, at least for a night or two.

And spending less at pricey resorts (that tend to stress fragile coastlines and often support mega corporations outside of Hawaii) means more to spend on special mementos, good fun and local merchants and artists. Shopping at a grower’s market for example is a nice alternative to spending $4 for half a papaya in a resort. For a great campsite breakfast, pick up some fresh fruit (how’s five papayas for a buck sound?), mac nut bread and Kona coffee (”talk story” with locals while you’re there, and you’ll learn a lot more than you will lounging at a resort). Then there are the kayaking adventures, sunset dinner cruises (even frugal, backpacker types appreciate a little wining and dining!), horseback riding on the beach, snorkeling with the dolphins…well you get the idea!

Pitching a tent on a tropical beach or in a fragrant volcano forest is easy in Hawaii where campgrounds range from drive-up parks with full amenities to wilderness settings accessible only to hikers. Public campgrounds are run by Hawaii’s National Parks, State Parks and County Parks and are as prolific in Hawaii as papayas.

Those planning on spending all their vacation nights at campgrounds and limiting their vacation to one island would do well opting for the island of Hawaii (Big Island) or Kauai. Both offer several choice campgrounds. However, island hoppers shouldn’t overlook the islands of Oahu, Maui, Molokai and Lanai. Depending on the time of year, some reservations fill up months in advance. Apply for permits as early as possible. A good place to start is at Hawaii State Campgrounds which tend to be nicer and cheaper (from $5 for most tent camping to $55 for your own, screened A-Frame at Hapuna Beach on the Big Island).

Don’t Get Caught in the Phishers Net

October 29th, 2008

Phishing, pronounced fishing, is now becoming an epidemic throughout the Internet. Most people who use the internet and receive emails have probably received a phishing email or two.

But what is phishing and who are the phishers?

You receive an email from your bank like this below….

“Dear bank customer, your bank details need to be verified by clicking on this link……” and so it goes on.

The link that they give you to click on, however, does not open up where you think it should. Although, to all intents and purposes it looks like your banks page, but what is really happening is that your bank details are going straight into a phishers’ computer to be used later by them to fleece you of all your money.

There are many of these scams about. The more common ones are for eBay, Paypal and your bank. All of these look very real and to a casual observer or someone new on the Internet, these could be from who they say they are from.

Other scams being used that slightly differ from the above are the emails from a certain son, daughter, or wife. These follow the same pattern more or less. It starts with a terrible accident where their father / husband have been tragically killed with a huge fortune in an offshore bank. They need your help and bank details so that they can transfer millions of US Dollars into your bank so that they can get hold of it.

A variation and one that I have only just started to receive is from a solicitor saying that a long lost relative has left a legacy and the solicitor wants my bank details to be able to transfer this legacy into it.

Some of the worst phishing that has hit the Internet, and the ones that are more likely to succeed are the “Charity” ones.

A web site set up to collect money for well known disasters like Hurricane Katrina or the earthquake that hit India / Pakistan . Of course the money does not go to the good causes that it is meant to go to but goes straight into the Phisher’s pocket.

So that is what phishing is and you can now see that the people doing the phishing are none other than criminals.

How can you tell a phishing email or scam?

For the first group, eBay Paypal and Banks it is relatively easy and a little detective work reveals all.

First of all remember that eBay, Paypal or any bank will NEVER ask you for your bank details in an email. By the way, they will not ask you for your log in detail either. Your user name and password are your own private affair and these establishments will not ask you for them.

Secondly, look at how the email addresses you. It will say “Dear eBay user Paypal user or Bank Customer”. This is a dead giveaway. Neither eBay nor Paypal (which is owned by eBay) will ever address you such. Their emails will always address you by your user name.

Banks are the same, if you are a customer of a bank, they will address you by your known name. Additionally, banks will not normally email you unless you first give the bank permission.

Finally, for this section, a good way of finding out whether it is a scam is by running your mouse over the link. When you do so you will see a strange web address that bares no relationship with the supposed sender of the email.

For example, you would expect an email from eBay to have a web address that starts http://www.ebay.com/ not something like https://signin.ebay.com/blah blah blah.

For the second group of scams, the sob sob story type. These are pretty obvious. No one is going to give you money for nothing and ask yourself why would a African Princess or whatever ask for your help in the first place.

If it looks like a scam it usually is a scam.

Someone better than I once said ” If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, the chances are it IS a duck.”

Finally, for the third group, the charity email that is calling on your good nature to give to a worthy cause. Basically if you feel that you want to support a worthy cause then send money directly to the registered address of that charity. You can look that up on the internet. Or you can go to the charity shops and give money there. You could also buy something and get something back in return.

There are many ways of giving to charity, replying to bogus emails is NOT one of them.

How do you protect yourself?

Be vigilant with all the emails you receive. Delete all the scam ones, or set up a block on them so you don’t receive them. If you get the phishing one from eBay, Paypal or the bank, do not on any account click on the link. Forward these direct to the relevant authorities. For eBay and Paypal it is spoof@ and then either eBay.com or Paypal.com Most Internet banks have an email address where you can forward phishing emails and a quick look on their official site will give you their address.

On no account should you reply to these emails. Remember these are Phishing emails and the sender usually does not know whether the email address they sent it to is real or not. They have programs that generate thousands of email addresses and send bulk emails out regularly. If you reply to one they have caught you.

There are other ways to get hold of your details and one of these is by installing a Trojan onto your computer. A Trojan is a small malicious program that will record your key strokes and send them off to the person who installed the Trojan.

In days past, Trojans were installed onto computers by opening of emails or opening attachments on emails. These days that need not be the case. Especially with the amount of programs and music that is downloaded from sites. Any one of these could carry a Trojan.

Be sure that you have an anti spyware program and that you keep it up to date. A good quality anti virus program is also a must these days as well. Top of the list though is to have a Fire Wall on your computer.

Windows XP service pack 2 comes with a good firewall and Microsoft have a free anti spyware program that you can download from their site.

There is a tendency for young, and not so young to exchange music files with each other. They do this by allowing others to access their computer directly over the internet.

DON’T DO IT! That is an open invitation to phishers and all unscrupulous people to take control of your computer.

Be on your guard at all times.

Plants For Establishing a Hedge in Furlong Pa.

October 27th, 2008

This article is designed to help Furlong Pa. residents select plants and shrubs for hedges. Not all plants that are suitable are listed here but most common and easy to raise ones are listed.

Hedges are one of the major components of your landscape. Hedges define the limits of your landscape and thus should be the starting point in your landscape design. Before selecting plants, you should carefully consider their landscape requirements and the characteristics of the plants. For example, deciduous plants drop their leaves in the fall and are effective screens mainly during the growing season. Evergreens provide good screening all year. Gardeners considering a sheared, formal hedge should realize that they may need to be pruned (sheared) several times a year to remain attractive. In comparison, an informal, natural hedge is relatively low maintenance. Select shrubs that grow to the desired height. Planting a tall-maturing shrub where a short, informal hedge is desired creates work. Many landscaping problems are prevented by selecting the correct planting material.

Our plants are well suited for many hedge plantings. We sell many types of plants and shrubs which can work well as a natural privacy boarder. Bare-root material is the most economical type of nursery stock when planting a hedge. However, bare-root plants are rather small. For the beginner, bare root is the hardest type of plant to grow out. Container-grown and balled and burlapped plants are larger, but are more expensive. You will have better luck with potted and B&B stock…The added cost will be worth it. Most B&B and potted stock can be planted whenever the ground is not frozen as long as you have the knowledge to help the plants along.

Plant spacing is determined by the plant species and hedge type. Most plantings will range from a spacing of a foot or two to a couple of feet. Many people will plant the shrubs and fail to prune them back hard. Pruning generally will make the shrubs more dense and compact.

The following is a list of shrubs suitable for hedges that we sell:

Amur maple Acer ginnala 15 to 18 feet natural Barberries Berberis species 1 to 5 feet natural or sheared Boxwood Species 2 to 4 feet natural or sheared Redosier dogwood (D) Cornus sericea 8 to 10 feet natural Burning bush (D) Euonymus alatus 6 to 15 feet natural Junipers (E) 8 to 15 feet natural Beautybush (D) Kolkwitzia amabilis 8 to 10 feet natural Spirea VanHoutte (D) 6 to 8 feet natural Lilacs (D) 4 to 15 feet natural Yews (E) Taxus species 2 to 10 feet natural or sheared Arborvitae (E) 3 to 15+ feet natural or sheared Arrowwood viburnum (D) Viburnum dentatum 6 to 8 feet natural American Cranberry (D) 8 to 12 feet natural

When you visit Highland Hill Farm at 5275 W Swamp Rd. (rt. 313) Fountainville Pa. we will be happy to show you these plants. You can also go to our web site http://www.seedlingsrus.com

Plants We like for the Clay Soils of Furlong Pa.

October 27th, 2008

Like our farm, Highland Hill Farm, Furlong Pa. is located in an
eara with lots of clay. We therefore like plants that grow well
in clay. Arborvitae, in particular the Green Giant is our
favorite. Here is why. The hardiness zone for the Green Giant
Arborvitae is from zones 5 to 8. Its evergreen with rapid growth
rates that in ideal conditions can be up to 3 feet per year.
Site requirements for the green giant is sun to partial shade,
moist well drained soil but does well in clay, and needs
protection from wind . Its texture is fine with its form conical
being narrow to broadly pyramidal, reaching from 50 to 80′ in
height to 15 to 20 feet in width. The leaf is rich green
graceful foliage. It keeps its foliage color in the winter. The
Green Giants flowers/fruit are .5″ erect female cones. The Green
Giant has strong wood, casts dense shade, and has cinnamon red
bark when young. Arborvitae do not tolerate salt spray. These
arborvitae should outlive even your children.

Athletes Foot in the Locker Room

October 21st, 2008

One thing that I have always hated about being in sports is that you always had to be careful about walking around without any shoes or socks on. If you ever did, it was likely that in a locker room full of sweaty guys, you would almost certainly get athletes foot. I made sure that I never walked around without at least socks on, so I am not sure how I ended up getting it, but it happened. It is one of the most painful things you can get, and I hope I never get it again. I probably won’t since I am not in high school anymore.

I have been having the worst time with my feet lately. It has been so hard to just get in the shower without my feet getting red, itching, and inflamed, and feeling like they are on fire. I have never had any foot problems before, so I am not sure what this could be. I was thinking that maybe it was athletes foot, but I would not really know unless someone else told me that is what it was. Do I need to go to the doctor to get it looked at? I hope someone can help me figure out what to do.

Wild Turkey Facts

October 20th, 2008

Re-printed with permission.

Imagine going on a turkey hunt only to find there are no wild turkeys! It sounds far fetched, but in the early 1930s this grand game bird was on the verge of extinction. But today, thanks to hunters and wildlife restoration programs, the wild turkey is abundant and thriving in its homeland.

Wild turkeys are native to North America and there are five subspecies: Eastern, Osceola (Florida), Rio Grande, Merriam’s and Gould’s. All five range throughout different parts of the continent. The eastern is the most common and ranges the entire eastern half of the U.S. The Osceola (Florida) is only found on the Florida peninsula, while the Rio Grande ranges through Texas and up into Oklahoma, Kansas and Colorado. Rios are also found in parts of the northwestern states. The Merriam’s subspecies ranges along the Rocky Mountains and the neighboring prairies of Wyoming, Montana and South Dakota. And you can find Gould’s throughout the central portion of Mexico into the southernmost parts of New Mexico and Arizona.

Between 5,000 and 6,000 feathers cover the body of an adult turkey in patterns called feather tracts. A turkey’s feathers provide a variety of survival functions-they keep him warm and dry, allow him to fly, feel and show off for the opposite sex. The head and upper part of the neck are featherless, but if you look close, you can see little bumps of skin on the bare area.

Most of the feathers exhibit a metallic glittering, called iridescence, with varying colors of red, green, copper, bronze and gold. The gobbler, or male turkey, is more colorful, while the hen is a drab brownish or lighter color to camouflage her with her surroundings.

Two major characteristics distinguish males from females: spurs and beards. Both sexes have long powerful legs covered with scales and are born with a small button spur on the back of the leg. Soon after birth, a male’s spur starts growing pointed and curved and can grow to about two inches. Most hen’s spurs do not grow. Gobblers also have beards-tufts of filaments, or modified feathers, growing out from the chest-which can grow to an average of nine inches (though they can grow much longer). It must also be noted that 10 to 20 percent of hens have beards.

Wild turkeys have excellent vision during the day but don’t see as well at night. They are also very mobile. Turkeys can run at speeds up to 25 mph, and they can fly up to 55 mph.

When mating season arrives, anywhere from February to April, courtship usually begins while turkeys are still flocked together in wintering areas. After mating, the hens begin searching for a nest site and laying eggs. In most areas, nests can be found in a shallow dirt depression, surrounded by moderately woody vegetation that conceals the nest.

Hens will lay a clutch of 10 to 12 eggs during a two-week period, usually laying one egg per day. She will incubate her eggs for about 28 days, occasionally turning and rearranging them, until they are ready to hatch.

A newly-hatched flock must be ready to leave the nest within 12 to 24 hours to feed. Poults eat insects, berries and seeds, while adults will eat anything from acorns and berries to insects and small reptiles. Turkeys usually feed in early morning and in the afternoon.

Wild turkeys like open areas for feeding, mating and habitat. They use forested areas as cover from predators and for roosting in trees at night. A varied habitat of both open and covered area is essential for wild turkey survival.

Lack of quality habitat was a problem in the past, but with the passing of the Pittman-Robertson Act in 1937, an excise tax on sporting arms and ammunition, wildlife restoration programs now have money to use to restore wild turkeys and wild turkey habitat. And with the invention of the rocket net, wildlife agencies and the NWTF can trap and transfer turkey populations to areas of suitable habitat.

>From only 30,000 turkeys in the early 1900s to nearly 7 million today, this intriguing species has truly made an awesome comeback.
